ok. drifters be forewarned - this is going to be ugly and totally unrelated to drifting.
upon hearing the news that smu is to set up singapore's 2nd law school, i was rather pissed off to say the least.
is there a point in setting up a 2nd law school? to make our already over competitive wages lower? singaporean lawyers make as much as a paralegal in US and work shit hours performing high stress work. so now, we will continue to work the shit hours cause the law firms wont see any point in hiring more staff (work is getting done anyway) and yet, starting wages will drop cause of more lawyers graduating every year. what if one day, we end up like engine students and graduate into sub 2k starting pay. -shudder-
worse, increasing the intake means that people who were not good enough for the initial cut may get in. as it is, there are already enough people who IMO are in law school and who cannot cut it. so wow, now we are going to get 200 more of such people every year. down goes our professionalism and down goes the standard of law grads. i really hope that after i graduate, i will still be able to say i was from the faculty of law with pride.
and of course, for utterly selfish reasons, the more law undergrads there are floating around, the less prestige in being one. boo.
